How the Shopify theme detector works

Every Shopify storefront ships a small piece of configuration in its page source called Shopify.theme. It holds the theme name the merchant sees in their admin, the original theme it was built from (the schema name), the version number and, for themes bought from the Shopify Theme Store, a theme ID. Our theme finder fetches the public homepage, reads that object and translates it into plain language, so you see "Dawn 15.0" even when the merchant renamed it to "Holiday launch v3".

When a store runs headless, for example on Hydrogen or Next.js, there is no theme at all. The theme identifier tells you that too, and still lists the apps and tracking tools it can see. Want to do it by hand? Read our guide on how to find out what theme a Shopify store is using, or check whether a site is built on Shopify first.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find out what Shopify theme a store is using?

Paste the store address into the box above. Store Teardown reads the theme information Shopify includes in every storefront page and shows the theme name, the original theme it is based on and its version. It also works when the store has renamed its theme, because the original theme schema name is still published.

Can it detect custom or renamed Shopify themes?

Yes, in most cases. Stores often rename their theme, for example "Dawn - live v3". Store Teardown reports both the display name and the underlying theme it was built from. Fully custom themes built from scratch show their own internal name.

Can it detect which apps a Shopify store uses?

Yes. It recognizes 51 common apps and tools, including review apps, email and SMS tools, loyalty programs, buy now pay later providers, search, page builders and tracking pixels, by looking for their scripts on the homepage.

What is the store score?

The score is the share of 18 practical checks the homepage passes, covering SEO basics, speed, mobile setup, accessibility and conversion essentials like free shipping messaging, reviews and email capture. Each failed check comes with a concrete fix.

Is Store Teardown free?

Yes. There is no signup and no limit for normal use.

How do I know if a website is a Shopify store?

Run it through the detector. If the site is not built on Shopify, Store Teardown tells you so instead of showing a theme.
